In the coming months, we will start seeing political ads for the 2020 presidential campaign. Trade policy is likely to feature prominently, especially in certain industrial states. The Trump campaign posted a video recently that perhaps gives us a flavor of their message. The trade part starts around 17:50. At about 18:30, there is a clip of Joe Biden talking about NAFTA on the floor of the Senate, in which he says: "I'm supporting NAFTA because I think it is a positive thing to do, but not because I think it's going to cure the workers' fears, who have legitimate reason to be concerned." If that's the most controversial statement the Trump campaign could find related to Biden and NAFTA, I think the Biden campaign is going to do fine on trade policy.
It's going to be interesting to see each side's messaging on this issue. I'll try to track all of it here on the blog.
