The incumbent will serve as the National Secretary and Director of the Trade Agreement Secretariat and will lead a team responsible for the impartial administration of the dispute settlement provisions of each free trade agreement to which the United States is party.
The Trade Agreement Secretariat is responsible for overseeing the impartial administration of the dispute settlement provisions of the NAFTA and eleven other free trade agreements to which the United States is party (Australia, Bahrain, Dominican Republic-Central America (DR-CAFTA), Chile, Colombia, Korea, Morocco, Oman, Panama, Peru, and Singapore).
The Secretariat is accountable to the Free Trade Commission, which comprises the ministers responsible for international trade in the three NAFTA partner countries. The Secretary and Director of the Trade Agreement Secretariat shall be an expert in international trade policy and serve on both inter-agency and inter-government work groups to enhance and streamline the process; will be responsible for briefing senior officials on the trade agreements; and will also be responsible for managing the office, personnel, and overseeing the budget and disbursement of funds.
