This is from the PEPA/SIEL Conference Conference Chairs:
Dear colleagues,
It is now clear that due to the ongoing global Coronavirus crisis, we will be unable to hold the 9th PEPA/SIEL conference as planned for May 2020 in Jerusalem. This is of course highly disappointing to all involved in the planning and preparation of the conference, and of course to those who were expecting to present their latest research, but the risks of contagion, as well as the expected continuation of stringent restrictions on travel and events and the economic constraints involved make this decision inevitable.
We sincerely hope that we will be able to convene the conference at a later date in Jerusalem, perhaps even in the Fall of 2020, but at this stage it is impossible to make a definitive decision in this respect. In any case, we would like to thank all those who have devoted their time and energy to the planning of the conference, including the SIEL leadership, our conference committee, our invited senior speakers, and the administrative staff of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem whose organizational work has been indispensable.
The spirit of the PEPA conferences has always been one of learning through open discussion between emerging scholars and practitioners and more senior ones. As most of us in both academia and practice shift our professional activity online, we believe that these goals can be promoted through a virtual conference, even if not providing the significant intellectual and social strengths of a full conference experience. We are therefore working with all those whose papers were selected for presentation at the conference as well as with the senior speakers and commentators to facilitate such a virtual symposium, to be held during the original dates of the conference, and without prejudice to participation in a non-virtual PEPA/SIEL at a later date. Should the virtual format selected enable participation of other colleagues and researchers, we will provide relevant information closer to the conference.
In any case, we wish you, your families and loved ones all the best for the months ahead.
Best regards,
The PEPA/SIEL Conference Chairs
Tomer Broude, Freya Baetens and José Caiado
