Final Oral Round - ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO law
Between 7 and 12 June 2016, the Final Oral Round of the ELSA Moot Court Competition will take place in Geneva, Switzerland. Over 150 active students, their team coaches, renowned academics and practitioners from all around the globe will gather at the Headquarters of the World Trade Organization and the Graduate Institute for the concluding finals of the competition.
The ELSA Moot Court Competition (EMC2) is a simulation of a World Trade Organization (WTO) panel proceeding. It is designed to enhance students’ knowledge about international trade law and the WTO dispute settlement procedures, as well as to enhance the capacity for meaningful engagement in multilateral trade in the long term through the voices of next generation’s trade lawyers, negotiators and economists. The competition is an annual, student-run moot court competition organized by the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) in co-operation with WTO.
The Final Oral Round of the EMC2 will be the culmination of the competition, during which the 20 best teams of the preceding Regional Rounds will be paired up and present their arguments in front of a panel of experts in WTO law, both as complainants and respondents in a fictive WTO law case. Students will be coming from far and wide, with teams representing Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, Greece, India, Kenya, the Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine and United States. This year the case focuses on future energy sources and environment.
The Final Oral Round itself will start with the opening ceremony on 7 June, led by the Appellate Body Member Professor Yuejiao Zhang. During the following three days, the teams will plead multiple times until the two best teams are selected for the Grand Final, which will take place on 11 June at the very WTO Headquarters and which will be chaired by the Appellate Body Member Mr Ricardo Ramírez-Hernández. The winners will be announced by Mr Karl Brauner, the Deputy Director-General of WTO, who will conclude the 14th edition of EMC2.
Best of luck to all the teams that have faced the global challenge!
