We talked about the EU's proposed Tobacco Products Directive here, here, and here. The EU measure is moving ahead, and here are some details about what they will be doing:
- The sale of cigarettes in packets of 10 is expected to be banned by 2016
- Menthol cigarettes are to be banned and health warnings covering 65% of cigarette packs will be introduced. There is to be no ban on packs of slim cigarettes. Parliament did vote to delay the menthol ban, voting that it should come into force in eight years instead of three.
- Legislators put new limits on advertising for electronic cigarettes but have so far rejected proposals for them to be regarded as medicinal products.
Presumably this will all be discussed in the TBT Committee at some point.
