Sunday's New York Times has a piece by Eduardo Porter commenting on the literature evaluating the effects of immigrants on the wages of low-wage workers in the U.S. See the excerpts on the Washington Monthly blog.
As usual, there are several ways to view the situation of U.S. low wage workers, and to suggest correlation with the rise of immigrants. The New York Times article suggests that conclusions that immigrants have suppressed wages are exaggerated.
What we really seem to need in the U.S. is a way to improve the competition for CEO salaries. Is there international mobility of CEOs? Presumably these people are not willing to be illegal immigrants, so perhaps there are greater barriers to their mobility than to unskilled worker mobility?
